multiplex | 2025
In the deep core of the mountain chain, blood flows and binds grandmother to mother, mother to granddaughter and granddaughter to grandmother.
This sculpture continues my exploration of ancestry, spirituality and heritage while experimenting with the material qualities of wood and the translation of a two-dimensional image into three dimensions. Built intuitively from layered and cut sheets of multiplex, this sculpture plays with the layering of cut out forms.
The sculpture draws on my research into Korean shamanism and folk rituals, combining images from my personal research and family archive with references to traditional shamanic imagery. Like a portal, it brings together different times and realms, connecting family history and ancestry with ideas of spirituality, memory and transmission. Its open form also reflects the fluidity of Korean shamanistic beliefs, in which spirits can move between places and sacred sites can take many forms, from mountains and rocks to springs and trees.
The work has been shown at OBJECT 2025, KunstRAI 2026 and no fixed outcome 2026.
